Logo LGLänsgården Fastigheter AB is a local, publicly-controlled real-estate company specialized in the development of customized living facilities. LG’s 150,000-square-foot property portfolio is located across five towns in Örebro County in Sweden, from Askersund in the south to Hällefors in the north, and includes facilities ranging from kindergartens to the senior living facilities. The latter is among Länsgården’s major concerns: 750 of its apartments are located in senior housing facilities and retirement homes, and are rented out to elderly residents, some of whom have special needs. Among these facilities is Ängen, a large senior living facility and retirement home currently under construction in south-eastern Örebro, to be completed in Summer 2011. The location concentrates a number of important facilities and services on the same premises as the senior living facility, namely:

  • Individually tailored support for residents of the senior living facility, and home care services (provided by the Örebro Municipality) for seniors requiring help in every-day life;
  • Seven apartments with a common living area for socializing, targeted towards seniors with disabilities who require staff assistance;
  • A public health center which provides specialized medical services, a laboratory, maternal health, child health, and social/psychology and physiotherapy services;
  • A day rehabilitation center, which is mainly focused on older persons living in their own homes, and is staffed with occupational therapists and nurses.

Within Robot-Era, Länsgården will provide extensive support for the experiments to be performed in Sweden, as manager of the Ängen pilot facility. It will in particular contribute to WP2 (user - and town - centered design of robotic services) and WP8 (experimental sessions). Länsgården has a vested interest in the inclusion of robotic technology in senior facilities, and will actively contribute to WP10 (dissemination, exploitation and demonstrations).

Länsgården has begun a collaboration with partner ORU aimed at developing and testing technological solutions for elder care. Since 2008, Orebro University and Länsgården cooperate (through NovaMedTech, an EU-backed initiative) towards the aim of deploying robots, sensors and actuators in a selection of the apartments in Ängen. At present, eight senior living apartments have been equipped with an RFID-enabled floor so as to facilitate robot navigation and person localization.

Alf Modigh (Property Manager) has a long experience in designing, building and managing special-purpose apartments, and in particular elderly-living facilities. He is responsible for technical and financial management at Länsgården. Alf is also Länsgården’s representative in the Örebro network for senior and elderly living, and will be involved in evaluation and in the instantiation of the physical test-bed in the Ängen senior living facility.
