BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION

The Institute of Technical Aspects of Multimodal Systems (TAMS) at Hamburg University (http://www.uni-hamburg.de) is led by Prof. J. Zhang and is dedicated to research and education in:

(i) multimodal sensing and representation
(ii) knowledge-based robot control and learning
(iii) mobile service robot systems.

UHAM/T has 6 permanents, 8 PhD and 3 postdoctoral researchers.


MAIN TASKS WITHIN THE PROJECT

In the Robot-Era project, UHAM/TAMS will lead WP 4 (Domestic robotic platform development) because its experience in the research topics of manipulation and physical interaction with users and objects and contribute to the other technical WPs, concentrating both on several learning tasks and active perception. UHAM/TAMS will also contribute to integrate the implemented functions and affordances into an ontology that will be defined within the proposal.


PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

With its collection of mobile robots, including the service robot TASER, UHAM/TAMS possesses extensive knowledge of networked and heterogeneous robotic systems. Current research addresses both hardware and software aspects, including distributed robot software architectures and the development of smart sensor systems, e.g. integrating vision and laser scanners, and active illumination. Work on mobile navigation is strongly coupled with learning approaches on the grasping and handling of everyday objects.
UHAM/TAMS is involved in several national and international research projects. Current projects approaches to active robot vision and active illumination have been intensively investigated (BMBF project IVUS “Intelligent Vision Systems for Service Robots”, 2006-2009). Multimodal robot action representation has been studied in a CINACS project (DFGIRTG “Cross-modal Interaction in Natural and Artificial Cognitive Systems”). UHAM/T has successfully coordinated the FP6 Project MING-T (2007-2009), is participating in the FP7 IP HANDLE and CA ASSYST. In addition to that UHAM/TAMS qualified for becoming member of the FP7-ICT-231143-ECHORD.

PEOPLE

Prof. J. ZhangProf. Jianwei Zhang is professor and head of TAMS, Department of Informatics, University of Hamburg, Germany. He is the coordinator of the German-Chinese (Hamburg-Tsinghua) International Research Training Group CINACS, leader of the BMBF project IVUS “Intelligent Vision Systems for Service Robots” and he was the coordinator of the EU FP6 MING-T Project and PI of the FP7 IP project HANDLE. He received both his Bachelor of Engineering (1986, with distinction) and Master of Engineering (1989) from the Department of Computer Science of Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and his PhD (1994) at the Institute of Real-Time Computer Systems and Robotics, Department of Computer Science, University of Karlsruhe, Germany. His research interests are multimodal information systems, novel sensing devices, cognitive robotics and human-computer communication. In these areas he has published over 200 journal and conference papers, technical reports, four book chapters and two research monographs. Dr. Zhang leads numerous basic research and application projects, among others the EU basic research programmes and the Collaborative Research Centre supported by the German Research Council. He has received several awards, including the IEEE ROMAN Best Paper Award in 2002 and the IEEE AIM Best Paper Award 2008. He is in the organization committees of some major robotics conferences, e.g. The Program Co-Chair of IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation 2011.
